About this recipe

Grochówka with smoked bacon is a thick soup made with split peas, smoked bacon, potatoes, and carrots. The peas naturally thicken the soup as they cook, while the bacon gives it a deeper, smoky flavor. The potatoes make the soup more filling, and the carrots add gentle sweetness. This classic soup makes a hearty lunch and tastes best when the peas are tender and the broth has developed the full aroma of the smoked bacon.

Ingredients

Servings: 6

  • 250 g split peas

  • 250 g smoked bacon

  • 2 carrots

  • 2 potatoes

  • 1.5 L water

Steps

  1. Rinse the split peas in a sieve, dice the potatoes and carrots, and prepare the smoked bacon to add to the soup.

  2. Heat the bacon in a pot for 4–5 minutes, until some of its fat has rendered and it becomes fragrant.

  3. Add the rinsed peas, pour in 1.5 L water, and simmer over low heat for 35–45 minutes.

  4. Add the carrots and potatoes. Cook for another 15–20 minutes, until the vegetables are tender and the peas naturally thicken the soup; add a little hot water if needed.
