About this recipe

Basil and lime lemonade is a chilled drink made with limes, water, honey, fresh basil, and ice. Lime provides a bold citrus flavor, while basil adds a green, lightly herbal aroma that distinguishes this lemonade from the classic mint version. Dissolve the honey in some of the water first, then combine it with the lime juice and remaining ingredients. Serve very cold while the basil is still fresh.

Ingredients

Servings: 4

  • 2 limes

  • 1 liter water

  • 2 tablespoons honey

  • a few basil leaves

  • ice cubes

Steps

  1. Juice the limes, then rinse the basil leaves and gently bruise them between your palms. Do not chop the basil finely, or it may overpower the drink.

  2. In a pitcher, stir the honey into some of the water, then add the lime juice and basil. Let stand for 2–3 minutes so the herbs release their aroma.

  3. Pour in the remaining water, add the ice cubes, and stir. The lime flavor should be distinct but balanced by the honey.

  4. Serve as soon as it is chilled. If the basil is very strong, remove some of the leaves before pouring into glasses.
