About this recipe

Cheese-topped yeast dough twists are a baked snack made with flour, milk, yeast, olive oil, and flavorful cheese. Once risen, the elastic dough is easy to cut into strips and shape into twists. The cheese adds a salty flavor and bakes lightly onto the surface. Let the dough rise fully, as this determines how soft the centers will be. Serve these homemade cheese twists warm or after cooling briefly.

Ingredients

Servings: 6

  • 250 g all-purpose flour

  • 7 g instant yeast

  • 150 ml milk

  • 80 g cheese

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon salt (5 g)

Steps

  1. Warm the milk to 30–35°C. Mix the flour with the yeast and salt, add the milk and olive oil, and knead for 8–10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise for 45–60 minutes, until noticeably increased in volume.

  2. Toward the end of the rising time, preheat a conventional oven (no fan) to 200°C and position a rack in the middle. Roll the dough out to about 8 mm thick and cut it into 6 long strips.

  3. Sprinkle the strips evenly with grated cheese and twist them lightly, pressing the ends so the cheese stays in place.

  4. Arrange the sticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes, until risen and evenly golden brown.
