About this recipe

French toast with caramelized peaches is a quick, sweet breakfast with crisp edges and a soft center. Slices of bread are dipped in an egg mixture with milk and cinnamon, then fried in butter until golden brown. Peaches cooked briefly with butter, sugar, and a little lemon juice go on top, creating a glossy, aromatic fruit sauce. This easy dish works for a weekend breakfast, brunch, or a warm dessert and tastes best immediately after preparation.

Ingredients

Servings: 2

French Toast

  • 4 slices white bread or challah, preferably slightly stale

  • 2 eggs

  • 100 ml milk

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 pinch of salt

  • 1 tablespoon butter for frying

Caramelized Peaches

  • 2 ripe peaches

  • 1 tablespoon butter

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla or vanillin sugar

For Serving

  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt or cream

  • 1 tablespoon chopped walnuts or almonds

  • powdered sugar for dusting, optional

Steps

  1. In a deep plate or bowl, whisk the eggs with the milk, sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until uniform.

  2. Wash the peaches, cut them in half, remove the pits, and cut them into eighths or thick slices.

  3. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet, then add the peaches, brown sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla. Cook for 3–5 minutes, until the fruit softens and is coated with a thick syrup, then remove it from the skillet.

  4. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in the same skillet or a clean one. Briefly dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture on both sides so it absorbs some liquid without falling apart.

  5. Cook the slices over medium heat for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crisp. If needed, cook them in two batches, adding a little more butter.

  6. Arrange the French toast on plates, top with the caramelized peaches, spoon over the skillet syrup, and add the yogurt or cream. Sprinkle with the nuts and, if desired, powdered sugar.
