About this recipe

Classic chickpea hummus is a creamy spread made with tahini, garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice, served with bread or vegetables. Chickpeas form a filling base, tahini adds deep sesame flavor, and lemon brings a fresh, slightly tart contrast. Add the garlic carefully, as it can quickly dominate such a simple hummus. Adjust how thick the hummus is with water or a little reserved chickpea liquid. This basic homemade hummus works well as a dip, a spread for bread, or an addition to a snack platter.

Ingredients

Servings: 6

  • 1 can chickpeas

  • 2 tablespoons tahini

  • 1 garlic clove

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • juice of 1/2 lemon

To serve

  • raw vegetables cut into sticks or bread

Steps

  1. Drain the chickpeas and reserve 2–3 tablespoons of the liquid to adjust the consistency if needed.

  2. Blend the chickpeas with the tahini, garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice until smooth.

  3. If the hummus is too thick, add a little of the reserved liquid or water, then season to taste.

  4. Serve with bread or raw vegetable sticks.
